Thesis: Lecturers are responsible for motivating students to learn.

1st argument: Lecturers are the important role model for students.

2nd argument: Motivation is one of the key to successful learning.

3rd argument: Making students motivated is the indicator of great lecturer.

Counter argument: Although it depends on the students’ attitude towards learning itself, but in general, there will be an effect of motivation for most of the students in the whole class.

Conclusion: Based on the reasons elaborated, it is clear that lecturers are responsible for motivating students to learn.

Success can be achieved through many factors and situation. Motivation, especially from the lecturers, can ensure students to gain a successful academic life. But, the world’s opinion on this issue is totally divided. Some people believe that it is not the responsibility of lecturers to motivate their students. In my opinion, I do believe that it is indeed the responsibility of the lecturers to keep their students motivated for several reason that will be discussed further.

Lecturers are important role model for students. Lecturers are seen as a more knowledgeable, more experienced, and more skilled figure who undoubtedly respected by the students. Lecturers could find out how to solve problems, as they are more experienced, and come out with solutions that students seek. By doing that, students will be motivated to learn and progress more.

Motivation is one of the key to successful learning. Research shows that there is an indirect positive effect of motivation to better GPA through deep strategy towards study and higher study effort. That’s why, when the students lost interest of the class, they will not grasp the lectures given effectively. But on the other hand, when the lectures motivate the students in their own ways, the performance of the students could increase significantly, making the purpose of learning right back on its track.

Making students motivated is the indicator of great lecturer.  As William Arthur Ward said, “A mediocre teacher tell. A good teacher explain. A superior teacher demonstrate. A great teacher inspire.”  Inspiring students is undoubtedly the trait of a teacher should have. Sometimes,  lectures might seems not to care whether students are paying attention or not, but deep down, they are concerned if the students will do poorly in their subject. Because when the students are successful in learning and achieving things, that could mean there is a great teacher that succeeded in teaching them. Therefore, it is an indicator of a successful lecturer.

It is true that despite all motivations given from external side, some people think that it still depend on the students’ attitude towards learning itself. We could not possibly force someone to do something if they themselves do not want to do it. From what I have experienced, some of my friends back then in high school were given special attention from teachers as they do poorly in academic and were given special counselling, but their attitudes towards learning still did not change at all. It could shows that for them, motivation for a change should come from their own selves. But then, the example I gave just now was only for certain types of people. If nobody motivates the whole class on learning, how will all of the students end up?  In general, the impact of motivation given by the lecturers is undoubtedly effective for the performance of the whole class.

It is clear from the reasons stated above that lecturers are responsible in motivating students to learn. It is because lecturers are the important role model for students, motivation is one of the key to successful learning, and making students motivated is the indicator of great lecturer. Even though it still depend on the students’ attitude towards learning itself, the impact of motivation is effective to their academic performances.
